📃 The Forest Forager – Wild Food Walk description and information

Explore the Atlantic Forest on this fascinating Forest Forager tour – a wild food walk with leading Brazilian Forager, Jorge Ferreira!

A passionate mushroom hunter and experienced collector of wild plants, Jorge will share with you some of his vast knowledge of amazing local plants – their scientific and popular names, their nutritional qualities and medicinal characteristics. After you meet the guides, there is a short journey by road into the rainforest covered mountains near Paraty. The forest forager tour takes place on forest trails in the Atlantic Forest. We use a number of different trails to minimise our impact on the environment but on each route, in addition to walking on forest trails, you will also see the agro-forestry system of farming in action and visit waterfalls and swimming holes.

After a short talk on safety and responsible foraging Jorge will take you into the forest, identifying and collecting amazing and tasty fruits and flowers, leaves and mushrooms and even insects that you will be invited to try. Jorge will help you identify edible plants and there will be plenty of wide ranging chat from biodiversity, nutrition, medicine and herbalism to botany, cookery, horticulture and history. At the end of the walk there is time for a refreshing swim in the swimming holes in the forest. This is a fascinating and fun day out for anyone interested in wild food or just curious about the Rainforest.

This Rainforest to Table Forest Forager tour finishes with a delicious lunch at a local restaurant including a salad made with the plants you have foraged on the way.

Due to Jorge’s hectic schedule Advance Booking is recommended to guarantee availability.

On the wildfood walk we explore the Atlantic Forest in a unique way: through your taste buds!

Our specialist forager will identify medicinal and edible plants, which you may pick and taste on the trail as you go.

But it's not just about picking the plants, a forager should always think about planting as well.

The Forest Forager tour usually takes place on Paraty's historic Gold Trail, built by enslaved Africans in the 18th Century.

After the trail there is nothing better than a dip in the waterfall to cool off.

From the Atlantic Forest to the Table: the tour ends with a wild salad of the plants you've collected along the way.
