History of Paraty

Baia de Paraty

The bay of Paraty!

First of all, it is where the forest goes down the mountain and touches the sea.

Protected coves, mangrove areas, abundant fishing, caiçaras villages creating a mosaic of culture and living natures!

There are an average of 65 islands within the bay of Paraty, which are part of the bay of Ilha Grande.

There are xx caiçaras communities that surround the entire bay.

Simultaneously, it is an area protected by the APA – Environmental Protection Area of the Bay of Paraty which aims to:

  • Make nature conservation compatible with the use of natural resources;
  • Valuing the social, economic, cultural and environmental functions of traditional communities in the coastal zone, by encouraging suitable alternatives for their sustainable use;
  • Guarantee the sustainability of the fishing stock in marine waters;
  • Ecologically correct and responsible use of the marine space, especially tourist activities.

Going back in time

If today we see fishermen caiçaras in their canoes, casting net to the sea in search of fish, could it be, as it was at the time of the Guaianás Indians?

Have you ever thought that paddling standing in very small canoes, may have been the inventors of the Stand Up Paddle ?? lol

We are around 1550, the Indians who lived here were already from the Tupi trunk, Tamoios, who came from the Amazon 550 years before, expelling the Guaianás to the interior.

It is not known for sure when the first European ship entered the Paraty bay and dropped anchor, but studies indicate that it was in the mid-16th century.

A calm, protected bay, full of natural resources and friendly natives. Why wouldn’t it be chosen as a safe haven?

Like other places in Brazil, this was done.

They chose the highest point close to the sea, which guaranteed views of the surroundings and the sea, and began building huts.

There, intending or not, the history of this beautiful bay and the city of Paraty began.

We are not going to tell the history of the city here, but to keep the focus on the theme, looking at the bay of Paraty.

Can you imagine, how many Portuguese ships, Spanish galleons and English and French ships have passed through Paraty?

Here, wood, sugar, gold, coffee and other riches from our lands have flown.

Africans, from different ethnic groups, also came here forcibly to work on the “development” of the colony.

Current days

Nowadays, it continues to be disputed, but the Portuguese forts that were erected to protect the bay against pirate attacks, continue without ever firing a cannonball if you want.

Nowadays it is disputed by our visitors who choose to stroll through the bay of Paraty Precisely for the nature that surrounds us and that we of Paraty Explorer, we both exalt and never tire of saying that it is BEAUTIFUL!

But not only of good things, lives the bay of Paraty.

  • Real estate speculation
  • Disordered growth
  • Pollution and garbage at sea
  • Predatory fishing

These are some of the problems that unfortunately affect this bay and it is not exclusive to Paraty.

As we know, it is a problem in Brazil and worldwide. Lack of sustainable practices that directly impact the lives of the surrounding communities.
